Media release: The South African Insurance Association (SAIA)
17 September 2008
Ronnie Napier appointed as Chairman of the SAIA Board
The South African Insurance Association (SAIA) confirmed that Ronnie Napier has today accepted his appointment as the new Chairman of the SAIA Board after a special general meeting held at the SAIA offices in Milpark on Monday, 15 September 2008. At this special general meeting the articles of association were changed to allow SAIA to appoint a non-member as Chairman after it was agreed at the previous SAIA Board meeting held on 20 August 2008 that Ronnie should be approached for this position because of his knowledge and experience.
Ronnie Napier, who served the industry as Deputy Chairman of the SAIA Board in 1999 and Chairman from 2000 – 2007, says: “It is an honor to have been approached to once again fill this prestigious position. I am looking forward to making a meaningful contribution towards an industry that is in the process of adapting to the changed and challenging financial services environment.”
Ronnie Napier had served the short-term insurance industry for many years in a number of different industry bodies and other relevant organisations and initiatives, including being the inaugural Chairman of the Financial Sector Charter Council. He was previously the representative of Lloyds in South Africa and senior partner of law firm Webber Wentzel Bowens.
“SAIA is excited to welcome back Ronnie Napier who has continually proven his dedication and passion for insurance issues in the past by successfully serving the industry as SAIA Chairman for over six years. We know that we can rely on his full commitment and loyal involvement for the next year,” says Barry Scott, Chief Executive of SAIA.
“The short-term insurance industry is in the process of changing many previously established business practices and principles and will hopefully, with Ronnie’s help, emerge as a better and more attractive industry more suitable to the new milieu of consumer awareness and protection,” adds Scott.
“The SAIA, as confirmed at the Board meeting on 20 August 2008, decided that SAIA will focus on four main issues, namely the image and reputation of the industry, legislation and regulatory issues, transformation and motor issues. We are privileged to have Ronnie on board on our journey to become a more member-focused organisation that is effective in managing national industry issues” says Scott.
SAIA is the representative body for the short-term insurance industry in South Africa.
